Happy Mother’s Day ~ It Was Love at First Sight

Mother’s Day is every day

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day. Thanks to Anna Jarvis, it’s the day designated to honor our moms. On this day, children everywhere galvanize to send flowers and chocolates; take mom to dinner; or at the very least pick up the damn cellphone and finally give her a long overdue call.

It’s true the holiday has been hijacked by Hallmark, florists, and any other business that has found a way to capitalize on our love for our moms.

But with that said, the spirit of Mother’s Day has merit. And we who have been lucky enough to be blessed with great moms should pause right now and honor the woman who with everything she had forced us into life.

First, She Gave Us Life

We’re not coaxed easily from the safety and warmth of our mothers’ wombs, our first home. Instead, when the time comes for us to make our entrance out of the silent darkness, our mothers have to force out a living, breathing new human being who is the size of one and a half footballs from an exit hole no bigger than a cherry.

That has to hurt like a mother. So, let’s honor our moms’ labors tomorrow and every day.

Then, as We Stumble through Life

Tragically, we don’t all get blessed with great moms–someone who loves, protects, nurtures us. I know.

A great mom protects her child from the evil mischief of an uncaring world. And when she can’t and we come home bruised and beaten by life and love, she holds us near, strokes us tenderly, and whispers hope enough to enable us to go back into the fray stronger. (Thanks, mum!)

So stop whatever it is you are doing right now; walk over to a mirror; and take a good look at yourself. Consider all you’ve become and all you hope of becoming. In other words, if our moms hadn’t nurtured our tiny bodies and our hearts and minds into adulthood, none of the goodness we’re beholding would be.

So, if our moms played even a small role in that process, let’s honor our moms tomorrow and every day.

And When the Enemy Comes from Within

Great moms stand tall and fight beside us as our #1 to protect us from ourselves and demolish the twin beasts of self-doubt and self-hate.

Great moms are dauntless against these inner beasts that roar and call us names. Moms roll their eyes, suck their teeth, and roar right back, “I don’t want to hear it. Not one more lie about my child! Stand down.” (Thanks, mum!)

And in the presence of our mothers’ love, those beasts shrink back. And the beauty of great moms is their ability to do this over and over and over again.

So, let’s honor their fortitude and impenetrable fortress of love tomorrow and every day.

So, Mom Is Home

I believe in love at first sight, because I’ve been loving my mom since I opened my eyes. ~alssyamarieg [tumblr]

My mum is the woman who I admire most and who has been my rock in this turbulence we call life.

She is my heart. She is my center. She is everything to me.

So, tomorrow and every day I honor you, mum. Words can say a lot but sometimes not enough. So I will keep it simple:

Mommy, I love you
Mommy, I love you
I really do

Happy Mother’s Day to all the great moms out there. We love you!
